Like many of the Old West Texas towns, the Round Rock Texas Real Estate community was originally a river crossing spot on the treacherous Brushy Creek on the old Chisholm Trail in the 1800's.
During spring and during heavy rain fall times, Brushy Creek was nearly impossible for cowboys, wagons and cattle to cross. The round rock sticking up from in the middle of Brushy Creek marked the safest place to cross the swollen creek - and you can almost imagine John Wayne and his horse making the crossing in the movie Chisum. In 1851 the original Round Rock Texas homes for sale and real estate community was established along the banks of Brushy Creek, just downstream of the big round rock - sticking up from the middle of the creek. You can see that famous round rock today still - as it's located on Chisholm Trail Street in Round Rock - whick lies in Williamson County. With the end of the Civil War, famous cattle rancher Jesse Chisholm began a bold cattle drive from the southern part of Texas through Round Rock, on his way to the lucrative cattle markets in Abilene, Kansas - which supplied beef to the gold miners in Colorado. His trail route, which crossed the round rock in Brushy Creek, soon began being called the Chisholm Trail. The word “maverick” came into use after Samuel Maverick, a Texan refused to brand his cattle. Eventually any unbranded calf became known as a Maverick. Later in 1878, downtown Round Rock Texas became the place of the famous gunfight between the infamous train robber, Sam Bass, gunned down by the Texas Rangers - reported to eastern US newspapers as the "Sam Bass Shootout". Every year now, the historical society in downtown Round Rock re-creates this old shootout event. (Sam Bass is still buried in old Round Rock Cemetery, which is now located on Sam Bass Road.)
The city of Round Rock today and the Round Rock TX homes market slowly began to grow as Austin's popularity grew.
